It was in 1843 when Christmas cards first came into being and with the advent of cheap postage and the appearance of envelopes the practice of sending Christmas greetings cards took off.
The
postmen of the day were dressed in scarlet tunics and as a result quickly became
known as Robin postmen.
So
quite understandably the Robin Redbreast very soon began to appear on the cards
themselves.
