THE BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIES EVER – AN EN VOGUE CHRISTMAS (2014)

“The Opera House” was owned by brothers Marty and Nathan (David Alan Grier and Eugene Clark) and in the 1990’s popular girl group En Vogue, Terry, Cindy and Rhona (Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron and Rhona Bennett), got their big break.

Twenty years later The Opera House is being run solely by the surviving brother Marty and is in trouble and likely to close its doors for good.

In order to save it Marty’s niece, Kendall (Genelle Williams) comes up with a plan to get En Vogue to reunite and do a Christmas performance at the place that gave them their start.

FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS SONG # 35 - ROCKIN' AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree

Written by Johnny Marks and Performed by Brenda Lee

Rockin' around the Christmas tree
At the Christmas party hop
Mistletoe hung where you can see
Every couple tries to stop

Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Let the Christmas spirit ring
Later we'll have some pumpkin pie
And we'll do some caroling

You will get a sentimental feeling
When you hear
Voices singing "Let's be jolly"
Deck the halls with boughs of holly

Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Have a happy holiday
Everyone dancing merrily
In the new old-fashioned way

You will get a sentimental feeling
When you hear
Voices singing "Let's be jolly"
Deck the halls with boughs of holly

Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Have a happy holiday
Everyone dancing merrily
In the new old-fashioned way

THE BEST CHRISTMAS STORIES – CHRISTMAS NOVELLA # 2 The Chimes: A Goblin Story

The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In, by Charles Dickens was published in 1844 and was the second in his series of "Christmas books":

The chimes are the old bells in the church on whose steps the principle character, Trotty Veck, plies his trade.

During the course of the story Trotty loses his faith in man's destiny to improve and as a result the bells call to him in the night and he feels compelled to climb the bell tower.

Once in the bell chamber the spirits of the bells and their goblin attendants reprimand him and tell him that he actually fell to his death on his climb up.

He is then forced to watch a series of visions of his daughter Meg and those closest to him and finds himself helpless to intervene.

The final vision was of his daughter Meg poised to jump into the river whereupon he cries out that he has learned his lesson and finds himself able to touch her and prevent her from jumping.

With the conclusion of that vision Trotty finds himself awakening at home as the bells ring in the New Year as if from a vivid dream.

The book concludes with the customary happy ending.

FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS SONG # 30 - MERRY CHRISTMAS DARLING

Merry Christmas Darling

Written By, Richard Lynn Carpenter / Frank Pooler

Performed by the Carpenters

Greeting cards have all been sent
The Christmas rush is through
But I still have one wish to make
A special one for you

Merry Christmas darling
We're apart that's true
But I can dream and in my dreams
I'm Christmas-ing with you

Holidays are joyful
There's always something new
But every day's a holiday
When I'm near to you
The lights on my tree
I wish you could see
I wish it every day

Logs on the fire
Fill me with desire
To see you and to say
That I wish you Merry Christmas
Happy New Year, too
I've just one wish
On this Christmas Eve
I wish I were with you

Logs on the fire
Fill me with desire
To see you and to say
That I wish you Merry Christmas
Happy New Year, too
I've just one wish
On this Christmas Eve
I wish I were with you
I wish I were with you

(Merry, merry, merry Christmas

FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS SONG # 34 - MARY, DID YOU KNOW?

Mary, Did You Know?

Words by Mark Lowry
Music by Buddy Greene
Sung by Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd

Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy
Would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy
Would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your Baby Boy
Has come to make you new;
This Child that you delivered
Will soon deliver you.

Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy
Will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy
Will calm the storm with His hand?
Did you know that your Baby Boy
Has walked where Angels trod?
When you kiss your Little Baby,
You kiss the Face of God!

Oh, Mary, did you know?
Oh, Mary, did you know?

The blind will see, the deaf will hear,
The dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak
The praises of the lamb!

Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy
Is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy

Will one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your Baby Boy
Is Heaven's Perfect Lamb?
This sleeping Child you're holding

Is the Great I Am!

A QUESTION OF POOH

Its Christmas time again, as if anyone could fail to notice.

Even without leaving my house I can see more than half a dozen house decorated to the hilt.

Every coloured light imaginable, Santa’s on the roof or climbing a ladder, sleighs, elves, snowmen, bells, stars baubles and last but by no means least standing almost four feet high that perennial favourite Winnie the Pooh.

Wait a minute though you might well be saying what does Pooh have to do with Christmas? Well every other house seems to have one so there must be something in it.

I don’t recall mention of him in the bible and in the many nativity plays I have seen over the years he was conspicuous by his absence and although there is a donkey it’s not Eeyore.

The stable did not house Piglet and the wise men did not travel from the east with Tigger baring gifts of Huney.

Nor in any of the Christmas traditions around the world is there a single reference to Pooh as one of Santa’s helpers.

There’s Black Peter, The Jolly Elf even the devil figure Krampus but no Pooh but people still give him pride of place on their lawns at Christmas.

Go figure.

AUSTRIA

In Austria St. Nicholas, is honored throughout the land and It is said that as a reward for his generosity God allowed him to return to earth each year to bring gifts to all the good children of the world.

THE BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIES EVER – CHRISTMAS IN PALM SPRINGS (2014)

There are a couple of problems though: her two kids who will do anything to get mom and dad back together again - even if they must hack mom's phone or pose as a secretary to make sure dad's in Palm Springs too. And father Joe who'll do anything to charm his way back into Jessica's life.

Joe and Jessica Brady (Patrick Muldoon and Dina Meyer) live separately in New York, but their kids Dylan and Zoey (Devin Lawrence and Kirstin Dorn) are determined to reunite the family.

Jessica worked for a PR firm and her and her boss Teddy (Ian Ziering) had a big presentation for a municipal campaign in Palm Springs, while Author Joe has a meeting arranged in Los Angeles to discuss his first-ever Californian publication opportunity.

The kids however have other plans and posing as a representative from Joe’s Agents office they rearrange his meeting to be in Palm Springs.

But the kids had their work cut out even with their parents in the same place and in the same hotel and it takes all the manipulation they can muster to get their parents to even sit at the same table as well as their best efforts to sabotage any advances Teddy might make towards Jessica.

In the end it required the intervention of hotel employee Gabriel (Bill Cobbs) with his angelic powers to seal the deal.

FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS SONG # 33 - JINGLE BELL ROCK

Jingle Bell Rock

Written By Joe Beal

Performed By Hilary Duff

Jingle bell, jingle bell
Jingle bell rock
Jingle bell swing
And jingle bells ring
Snowin' and blowin'
Up bushels of fun
Now the jingle hop has begun

Jingle bell, jingle bell
Jingle bell rock
Jingle bells chime in
Jingle bell time
Dancin' and prancin'
In jingle bell square
In the frosty air

What a bright time
It's the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell, time
Is a swell time
To go glidin' in a
one horse sleigh

Giddy-up, jingle horse
Pick up your feet
Jingle around the clock
Mix and mingle
In a jinglin' beat
That's the jingle bell rock

THINGS THAT GO BUMP, ELECTRICKERY AND OTHER DISASTERS

It was in the early hours of Christmas morning when I was awoken by a loud crash from the direction of the chimney breast.

I look around and my wife who is a very light sleeper hadn’t stirred.

Now given the time of the year and the time of night someone younger or more impressionable might have thought it was Father Christmas about his work in the chimney.

However being a grizzled old cynic I thought it more likely to be either a burglar or perhaps the wind blowing over my chimney or even subsidence.

I lay awake for about ten minutes trying to work out what the noise was and hearing no further noises I decided it must have been a dream and went back to sleep.

A few hours later awoken suddenly again this time by three excitement crazed children dragging their sacks of presents behind them on thing was for sure there would be no return to sleep after this disturbance.

When the children had opened all their stocking presents they rushed off downstairs for breakfast leaving a scene of devastation behind them.

After breakfast I went back upstairs and showered and then went into the bedroom to dress for the day.

On opening the wardrobe door I discovered the source of the crash that had woken me up several hours earlier.

The rail in the wardrobe had collapsed and all the clothes were in a heap at the bottom on top of the shoes.

“So it wasn’t a dream then” I said to myself.

Five minutes later and wearing a slightly creased shirt I made my way back downstairs to what sounded like bedlam.

The rest of the morning went according to plan; the children opened their main presents from under the tree and disappeared off to play with their favourites.

By twelve o’clock the dining table was laid complete with my late mother’s best table cloth, Christmas napkins, party favours, best china, glassware and the brand new table centre while emanating from the kitchen was the sound of steam rattling the saucepan lids together with the mouth-watering aroma of roasting Turkey.

In the lounge my wife was holding court with myself and her parents looking on as she was opening the few presents that still remained.

I left the group to go and boil the kettle for a drink as I entered the kitchen I looked at the electric cooker and there was one ring lit with nothing on it so I checked the other rings to make sure that the saucepan with the potatoes had heat under it which it did.

So I went to switch off the vacant ring only to discover it was already switched off.

Now there had been a little water spilled on the hob from where one of the pans had begun to boil over so I mopped up the spillage and using reverse psychology I turned the rogue ring on believing this would in fact turn it off, it didn’t it just tripped the breaker in the meter cupboard instead.

I went to the cupboard and reset the breaker and it tripped immediately.

So then we decided to wait for ten minutes before we repeated the exercise which ended with the same result.

It was decided that we could not use the cooker as it was just too dangerous.

With my wife almost in tears I said “it’s not the end of the world darling, and nobody died”.

So with true Dunkirk spirit we made the best of a bad situation.

As luck would have it the Turkey was cooked as was the stuffing, sausages and the Potatoes where boiled.

The remaining vegetables we were able to cook in the microwave and all we had to forgo were the roast potatoes and parsnips.

Now it wasn’t the most successful Christmas lunch we ever had but it could have been a lot worse.

“Bad things always come in three’s” I think we all thought it but equally all refrained from saying it out loud.

The next day, Sunday, passed off without incident for us anyway, my wife had to hit the stores in the Boxing Day sales to choose a new cooker.

Its late in the evening when, sitting down in front of the TV we see the news for the first time that day and we here the dreadful news about the Tsunami for the first time and even then it didn’t even hint at just how big a tragedy it really was.

Two hundred and fifty thousand dead in a heartbeat from Indonesia to sir Lanka and beyond and still counting.

We had our new cooker delivered on Thursday 30th December we were inconvenienced for five whole days.

Five days before normality was restored to our household.

Many of The survivors of the Tsunami will never have their lives restored to what they knew before Boxing Day.

Count your blessing, and make the best of what you have because it’s a lot more than many.

THE BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIES EVER – WE’RE NO ANGELS (1955)

It’s Christmas on Devils Island and three prisoners, Joseph (Humphrey Bogart), Albert (Aldo Ray), and Jules (Sir Peter Ustinov) escape from the Penal Colony to a small coastal town. Once there they decide to rob the General Store, run by Felix Ducotel (Leo G. Carroll) and his wife Amelie (Joan Bennett), to get some money and clothes and then travel by ship to another place where they might make their way back to France.

They pretend to be there to fix the roof while they plan the crime, but pretty soon they realize that the financial condition of the family Ducotel is not very good and they find themselves befriending the Ducotel’s and their daughter Isabelle (Gloria Talbott).

And after helping them in many different aspects of their lives they are invited to spend Christmas night with the family and as a result of being so well treated by the family they become very protective towards them.

Especially after the André Trochard (Basil Rathbone), the selfish and mean owner of the establishment, and his nephew Paul Trochard (John Baer) arrive to do an audit of the business, and they witness first-hand how the Trouchard’s exploit the Ducotel family.

So, the convicts decide they should use their expertise to intervene, in the end events take a surprising turn.

Highly recommend anyone should watch this as it makes for a different kind of family viewing at Christmastime.

FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS SONG # 31 - HAPPY HOLIDAY

Happy Holiday

Written By Irving Berlin

Performed By Andy Williams

Happy Holiday
Happy Holiday
While the merry bells keep ringing
May your every wish come true

Happy Holiday
Happy Holiday
May the calendar keep bringing
Happy Holidays to you

It's the holiday season
And Santa Claus is coming back
The Christmas snow is white on the ground
When old Santa gets into town
He'll be coming down the chimney, down
Coming down the chimney, down

It's the holiday season
And Santa Claus has got a toy
For every good girl and good little boy
He's a great big bundle of joy
He'll be coming down the chimney, down
Coming down the chimney, down

He'll have a big fat pack upon his back
And lots of goodies for you and me
So leave a peppermint stick for old St. Nick
Hanging on the Christmas tree

It's the holiday season
With the whoop-de-do and hickory dock
And don't forget to hang up your sock
'Cause just exactly at 12 o'clock
He'll be coming down the chimney
Coming down the chimney
Coming down the chimney, down!

Happy Holiday
Happy Holiday
While the merry bells keep bringing
Happy Holidays to you

Happy Holiday
Happy Holiday
May the calendar keep bringing
Happy Holidays to you
To you
Happy Holiday

FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS SONG # 28 - A WINTER'S TALE

A Winter's Tale

Written By Mike Batt, Tim Rice

Performed By David Essex

The nights are colder now
Maybe, I should close the door
And anyway the snow has covered all your footsteps
And I can follow you no more

The fire still burns at night
My memories are warm and clear
But everybody knows it's hard
To be alone at this time of year

It was only a winter's tale
Just another winter's tale
And why should the world take notice
Of one more love that's failed?

A love that could never be
Though it meant a lot to you and me
On a world wide scale we're just another winter's tale

While I stand alone
A bell is ringing far away
I wonder if you hear, I wonder if you're listening
I wonder where you are today

Good luck, I wish you well
For all that wishes may be worth
I hope that love and strength are with you
For the length of your time on earth

It was only a winter's tale
Just another winter's tale
And why should the world take notice
Of one more love that's failed?

It's a love that could never be
Though it meant a lot to you and me
On a world wide scale we're just another winter's tale

It was only a winter's tale
Just another winter's tale
And why should the world take notice
Of one more love that's failed?

It's a love that could never be
Though it meant a lot to you and me
On a world wide scale we're just another winter's tale

GANNA

Christmas in Ethiopia is known as Ganna and as the orthodox Ethiopian church uses the old Julian calendar and is celebrated on January 7th.

The most spiritual place experience a traditional Ganna is in Lalibela, which was built by King Lalibela in the 12th century as Ethiopia's own Jerusalem.

Pilgrims travel for days to attend colorful Ganna ceremonies in one of the thirteen ancient churches carved from solid volcanic rock.

In the rest of the country and particularly in the capital Addis Adaba the celebration takes place in modern churches that are designed in three concentric circles.

Men and boys have to sit separately from the girls and the women and the choir sings from the outside circle.

As the People enter the churches they receive candles and after lighting them everyone walks around the church three times.

Once people take their places they then stand throughout the mass, which can last as long as three hours

FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS SONG # 27 - SAVIOUR’S DAY

Saviour’s Day

Written By Chris Eaton

Performed by Cliff Richard

Now we have been through the harvest
Winter has truly begun
Now we have walked in the chill of the night
We are waiting for, waiting for
For the Saviour's Day

Many have come from the valleys
Many have come from the hills
Many have started their journey home
To be with someone, with someone
On the Saviour's Day

Open your eyes on Saviour's Day
Don't look back or turn away
Life can be your's if you'll only stay
He is calling you, calling you
On the Saviour's Day

Joining the old and the young ones
Joining the black and the white
Meeting the need of the hungry is he
Will we ever remember him
On the Saviour's Day

Open your eyes on Saviour's Day
Don't look back or turn away
Life can be your's if you'll only stay
He is calling you, calling you
On the Saviour's Day

Here's to the God of the present
(Raise your glasses)
Here's to the God of the past
(Drink to the King)
Here's to the hope in the future he brings
We will sing to Him, sing to Him
On the Saviour's Day

Open your eyes on Saviour's Day
Don't look back or turn away
Life can be your's if you'll only stay
He is calling you, calling you
On the Saviour's Day

On the Saviour's Day
On the Saviour's Day
He is calling you
On the Saviour's Day
On the Saviour's Day

(Calling, calling, calling you)
On the Saviour's Day
(Calling, calling, calling you)
On the Saviour's Day

(Calling, calling, calling you)
(Calling, calling, calling you)
(Calling, calling)
Raise your glasses drink to the King

INGERA AND DORO WAT

Injera is a traditional Ethiopian Christmas dish which is a type of bread in the form of a sourdough pancake.

The main meal is Doro Wat, which is a spicy chicken stew, served in beautifully decorated Baskets, with which the Injera serves as both plate and fork when it is used to scoop up the Wat.

LUCINA

Lucina is celebrated as the Sun goddess in Sweden but is in fact a combination of Norse goddess Freyr and the Christian martyr St Lucia. Young girls dress up to represent Lucina by wearing white gowns and on their heads evergreen wreaths with candles in them. The lighted candles, eight in all, supposedly represent the equinoxes, solstices and the points in between.

The young Lucina girls give out cookies on the streets at dawn to celebrate Lucina's
act of sharing food with the needy.
