THE BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIES EVER – ESTELLA SCROOGE: A CHRISTMAS CAROL WITH A TWIST! (2020)

 

A Broadway musical reworking of Charles Dickens well spun yarn of redemption.

In this modern retelling of the classic Christmas story in which a descendant of Ebeneezer Scrooge, Estella (Betsy Wolfe).

A cold and heartless grasping bitter business tycoon who is visited in her old hometown of Pickwick, on Christmas Eve by the ghost of her aunt, Marla Havisham (Carolee Carmello), who scares her with tales of doom and warns her she will have further visitations to give her a long-overdue attitude adjustment and show her the errors of her ways with the unique use of some of Dickens’ most beloved characters.

Between them they force her to face the consequences of her ways, and as a result she becomes a caring, generous, amiable woman and discovers the true spirit of Christmas.

Eric and Stephanie Kroger (Mike Canestaro and Amy Taint) head to the old family home for their usual Christmas vacation in the house built by “Grandpa” (Geoff Burkman), with their daughters Sally, Peggy and Tippie (Marylee Osborne Erin R. Ryan and Serendipity Lynch).

Everyone is excited about the trip apart from eldest daughter Sally who is a cynical college student who was very close to “Grampa” and is in danger of ruining the holiday for everyone until she is visited by a Christmas Spirit called Chips (Henrique Couto) who magically transforms her into a bulldog called Arthur.

It’s while she is trapped in her canine form that she gets to hear from her family how missed and loved she is and learns what makes her family tick and experiences the true meaning of Christmas.

As Christmas approached Santa (Kari Väänänen) was feeling the strain he finally snapped in the week before Christmas when he feels disillusioned with the materialism of Christmas and escapes as far from the North Pole as he can possibly get and goes to New Zealand.

He ends up at a camping site where Liz and Pete (Sia Trokenheim and Xavier Horan) and having their proper Kiwi Christmas with their kids Molly and Sam (Luca Andrews and Samuel Clark).

The kids soon discover his real identity, and it soon becomes apparent that it’s up to them to keep him out of the grasp of his pursuers and get him back to the North Pole in time for Christmas Eve.

After the theft, Sheriff Pierce (Eddie Cibrian) arrests George Bottoms (Drew Powell) so it’s up to the Sheriff’s daughter Violet (Violet McGraw) to prove his innocence with the help of her older sister Maddie (Lauren Lindsey Donzis) and George’s sons Kenny and Harrison Bottoms (Santino Barnard and Leonardo Cecchi).

Together they have to solve the case, find the bells and restore the Christmas magic to Pleasant Bay and its citizens in time for Christmas.

Then to add insult onto injury on top of the bad luck, he is cursed with another cross to bear in the form of shower-curtain-ring salesman Del Griffith (John Candy), and his loud overconfident outspokenness, incessant conversation, bad jokes and annoying company, who joins forces with him as they are going in the same direction.

And the fun comes as they bumble from one calamity to another as they make slow progress towards home.

In the midst of things her mother turns up intent on staying with her which ends in upset and recriminations, but she keeps working on her list anyway.

And as time goes by the question is, will Isobel have a White Christmas, and will it end under the mistletoe?

Even with the consent of the children it will take bold actions and courage to move their relationship to the next level.

So will she seal the deal, find forgiveness, and find true love before Christmas.
