Middle-aged
bakery owner Jack Carter and wannabe novelist (C. Thomas Howell) feels that his
family is in a rut, and he feels guilty that he can’t provide his wife Holly
(Lisa Sheridan) and children Kyle and Sienna (Dashiell Howell and Sadie
Stahura) what they deserve.
He
also feels distant to his children 17-year-old Kyle is obsessed with sports and
will be off to college before next Christmas and 14-year-old Sienna is
permanently attached to her phone.
So,
for the Christmas holiday, Jack books a Christmas break to the same cabin
resort in the mountains, Farthering Pines, where he used to go with his
parents.
But
when he’s there, he runs into his childhood, ultra-competitive nemesis Robert
Jones (Jonathan Silverman) who had grown up to be rich and successful and
better than Jack at everything.
What
makes things worse when Robert seems to upstage Jack at every turn, his own
family appears to be entranced by his nemesis and his wealth.
In
the end he apologizes to his family for being a failure as a provider, but he
soon realises that the love of his family is more rewarding than anything money
could buy.
