A young self-help author returns to her hometown. She soon discovers the true meaning of Christmas and family.
Rachel Kennedy (Natalie Knepp) is a motivational
speaker and writer who returns to her home of Fall Oaks, Massachusetts during the
Christmas holidays for a motivational event, to promote her new book, close to
Christmas which is crucial to her securing a further book deal.
She is managed by Stuart Ryan (Steve Bacic) who is
looking to control her, so he employs Producer Jack Nelson (Michael Rady) in
the hope that he will make the event what he wants it to be, unfortunately
Rachel and Jack fall for each other and he has less control than ever, and his
efforts are further exacerbated when a lady called Joy (Bonnie Bedelia) saves
her from being run over by a car.
The experience has a profound effect on Rachel and
she involves Joy as an advisor in the production of the event, much to the
annoyance of Stuart, and under the influence of Jack and Joy, Rachel
soon discovers the true meaning of Christmas and family.

A world weary journalist, Tom Langdon (Dermot Mulroney) takes a four day trip on a train from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles for Christmas hoping to get ideas for a book he's writing in memory of his late father.
He quickly gets to know the other passengers, in
particular busy body Agnes (Joan Cusack) and film Director Max Powers (Danny
Glover) who is travelling with his script writer Eleanor Carter (Kimberly
Williams-Paisley) who just happens to be Tom’s old flame and as the story
unfolds it's obvious to everyone aboard the Christmas Train that the two of
them are still in love.
