In the midst of the depression, William Kamp (Brian Krause) and his family are struggling to get by, especially in the aftermath of his wife’s untimely death.
Eldest
son Warren (James Gaisford) wants to work at
the local garage to help out financially, but his father is too proud to let
him, his sister Verna (Danielle C.
Ryan)
wants to go to college but as the oldest girl she had to take on the roll as matriarch
after her mother’s death.
Middle
child Russel (Ethan Hunt) has to do his
share of the chores, Tom boy Ruthie (Ruby Jones)
has to wear her sibling’s hand-me-downs but has a constant companion in her dog
Violet but bonds with new schoolteacher Miss Mayfield (Heather Beers)
and Norman (Jacob Buster) battles with the
effects of polio and falls in love with a horse belonging to their surly neighbour
Mrs. Rathbone (Nancy Stafford).
The
children all expect another Christmas without gifts or festivities but out of
the blue their father surprises them with one dollar in change and lets the
children use it to buy special gifts for each other.
