Catholic Priest, Father Chuck O'Malley (Bing Crosby) is sent to St. Mary's, a very run-down big city parochial school run by Sister Mary Benedict (Ingrid Bergman) assisted by Sister Michael (Ruth Donnelly).
The building was on the verge of being condemned, and Horace P. Bogardus (Henry Travers), the owner of a new building next door. wants to buy the building.
With
different approaches, Father O'Malley and Sister Benedict indulge in a good-natured
friendly rivalry but work together in an attempt to save the school, and work
on Mr Bogardus to donate his building to the school.
